Explanation of the Various Bet Types
These are only the major types, please consult your Sportsbook for the types of bets they offer.
Win bet
This bet is the most straight forward. If the horse you backed, wins, you win.
Place
With this bet, if the horse you backed, comes either first or second, you win.
Show
The same type of bet as place, but now the horse can either finish first, second or third.
Pick 3
With this bet you have to pick the winners of three consecutive races.
The Daily Double
With this bet you pick the winner of the first and second race of the day. Obviously this bet has to be placed before the start of the first race.
Quiniela
This bet is made on a single race where you bet on two horses that will finish first and second irrespectively of which is first or second.
Example:
You pick A and B. When the race is finished, horse B finished first and horse A finished second. You win.
If horse A finishes first and B second, you win.
If only A or B makes it into the first two positions, you lose the wager and if both don't make it, you also lose the wager.
Straight Trifecta
This is a pick three for one race. You pick horses to finish first, second and third. They have to finish in that exact order for you to win.
Perfecta or Exacta
The perfecta bet is done in the same manner as the quiniela, only difference is that the horses must finish in the order that you specified.
Quiniela Box
This is a modified version of the Quiniela bet. You select 3 or more horses n a single race. If any of the horses you picked, comes in first and second, you win. You can even select the whole field that is running!
The number of bets placed is calculated as follows: Number of Bets Placed = Horses x (Horses - 1) / 2
Example:
You pick horses A, B, and C. The actual bets placed are as follows (all of type quiniela):
- Quinela for A & B
- Quiniela for B & C
- Quiniela for A & C
All in all three bets are placed.
Perfecta Box
Same concept as in the quiniela box, but the horses must finish in the order that you specified. The amounts of bets placed is calculated in the same manner as with the quiniela box.
The number of bets placed is calculated as follows: Number of Bets Placed = Horses x (Horses - 1)
Example:
You pick horses A, B, and C. The actual bets placed are as follows (all of type quiniela):
- A First - B Second
- A First - C Second
- B First - A Second
- B First - C Second
- C First - A Second
- C First - B Second
All in all six bets are placed.
Trifecta Box
With this bet you are picking three horses that will finish first, second and third in any order. You are actually making six bets.
Example:
You pick horses A, B, and C.
If they finish
- A, B, C or
- A, C, B or
- B, A, C or
- B, C, A or
- C, A, B or
- C, B, A
you win.
Trifecta Key
This is a combination of a place and show bet. You pick one horse to win the race, and another two horses that you think will finish second and third.
Example:
You pick horses A to win, and horses B and C to finish second and third.
If Horse A wins and B second with C third you win. If Horse A wins and C second with B third, you win.
Superfecta
With this bet you are picking the first four horses to finish in that order. You win if the horses you picked, finish in that exact order.
Lay Bets
A lay bet is as straight forward as a win bet, the only difference being that the bet only wins if the the backed horse loses the race (in essence the you are placing money on who you think the loser of the race will be)
